Architectural project: cement tiles in the Viennese recording studio Pagon

August 11, 2024

In the midst of Vienna's turbulent city center, a small place of retreat and concentration has recently been created, which houses part of the Vienna musical scene. The studio “Pagon”, which as well as the Vila “La Haut” from Architekturbüro Hypothesis Made into what it is now was commissioned by the classical ensemble Pagon.

In this room, the ensemble can be listened to during chamber music evenings.

A classical music studio was created here, which offers the musicians of the Pagon ensemble the space they need for rehearsals and small house concerts. Acoustic planning for such special rooms was absolutely new territory for the hypothesis team. What spaces sound like plays a secondary role in most architecture projects and not the main role, as is the case here. And that is exactly why Mr. Schmitz brought a true Viennese professional on board with the Hofbauer Engineering Office for Building Physics and Acoustics.

Together, two studio rooms were installed as a room-in-room solution in the shop of the Wiener Grünzeithaus.

To optimize sound, a tailor-made sound absorption system was designed for the rooms, which gives musicians and their listeners the best possible sound experience. The reverberation times of the individual instruments have been considered and can now offer musicians and the audience maximum listening pleasure.

However, the acoustic formulation of the room often contrasted with the desired optical design, which should allow clear lines and shapes to prevail. However, these competing wishes and ideas of acoustic and visual equipment found a successful path, which we would like to show you with the photos of Studio Pagon.

Mr. Schmitz, who heads the architecture office, also chose our cement tiles from the Artist collection around Jakob Hentze, whose motif is also reflected in the suspension of the ceiling in the rooms. The material is combined with colour-coordinated cement flooring and oak wood flooring in the studio rooms.

In the small kitchen, musicians and guests can eat their meals.

As with every collaboration with the architecture firm Hypothesis, we are once again amazed at the effect that well-thought-out design has on its observer. The rehearsal room also offers space for up to 20 guests, who can be enchanted by the acoustic design as well as the visual attractions.

Studio Pagon also offers the opportunity to use the rooms for all classical musicians from Vienna who are still looking for the perfect rehearsal conditions.

We wish Studio Pagon and its musicians many wonderful hours and successful chamber music evenings, many thanks also to Achim Schmitz and Hypothesis for once again a very successful collaboration.

The color scheme alone creates a lot of atmosphere.
