Excursion to Marrakech: Young Designer Edition

August 11, 2024

Sometimes something really big grows out of something small. The Young Designer Edition is such a big thing that took a small, inconspicuous start.

It all began when Mr. Bailo and Mr. Pisar sought reinforcements for the Mosáico showroom in Cologne and contacted Prof. Ellwanger-Mohr from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. A freelancer should be found for the design sector and there is hardly a better address for that than the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. It's easy to explain why this is the case:

Students from the Lower Rhine University of Applied Sciences were able to be inspired by the sample tiles and get a feel for the cement tile.

One of our masters accompanies a student in making a cement tile in our factory in Marrakesh.

In this degree program, students learn, among other things, how to design with color and form, how patterns and structures work, and learn a wider perspective that is perfect for working at Mosáico.

During a joint meeting in our showroom, the idea was born for something bigger that went further than “just” expanding the Mosáico team. An excursion with students to Marrakech to our factory should be carried out. The background was the upcoming visit to Heimtextil 2017, the largest international trade fair for home and home textiles, and the planned “tableware and tableware” project as a semester theme for the students.

On the manufacturing side, workshops and visits to various factories and workshops in and around Marrakech were then organized for the students, which often allowed the students to get involved themselves and learn a lot of things.

Of course, this exciting trip was also documented, including this great video, which provides wonderful insights into the excursion.

But it wasn't over yet; of course, the students developed a lot of designs, which we would like to show you in the next article.

The students proudly present their handmade cement tiles.
