LAYING AND GROUTING CEMENT TILES
Cement tiles are known for their timeless aesthetics and durability. They add a touch of elegance and uniqueness to any room. But how do you lay these wonderful tiles correctly? Ours by hand manufactured cement tiles are special unique pieces that need to be laid well for a long shelf life. In this detailed guide, you'll learn everything you need to know to install cement tiles like a pro.
Step-by-step instructions for laying cement tiles
1. Apply tile adhesive
Cement tiles are laid in the central bed using cement adhesive for natural stone. Be sure to process the cement adhesive in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions printed on the package. Then apply the tile adhesive evenly to the surface with a notched spatula. Make sure that the glue is not too thick or too thin. An even layer ensures firm adhesion of the tiles.
2. Laying tiles
Mix the tiles from the various packages and, if necessary, lay them out for a coherent overall picture. Slight variations in color nuances occur during the craft process and are a sign of the exclusivity of the material and show that each tile is unique.
Start in a corner of the room and work your way out. Place the tiles carefully in the adhesive and use grout crosses to ensure even spacing. Press each tile lightly and tap it with a rubber mallet to fix it.
3. Align and verify
The cement adhesive should be at least 4 mm thick after installation. We therefore recommend that you use a 10-gauge trowel.
Use a spirit level to make sure the tiles are straight and level. If necessary, straighten the tiles and level them by tapping gently with the heel of your hand. A hammer should never be used, as hard blows can cause cracks.
4. Cut and clean
Tiles often have to be cut to size at the edges of the room. Mark the desired dimensions on the tile and carefully cut them to size with a tile cutter.
Remove cement stains and splashes immediately with a damp sponge because dried cement adhesive bonds very firmly to the tile
5. Let it dry
Allow the installed tiles to dry for at least 24 hours before you start grouting. This gives the adhesive enough time to completely harden.
Grouting: The finishing touch
1. Prepare grout
Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. The grout should have a smooth but not too liquid consistency.
2. Fill joints
Apply the grout to the tiles with a grout and press it into the joints. Work diagonally to ensure that the joints are completely filled.
3. Remove excess grout
Remove excess grout from the tile surface with a damp sponge. Be sure to wash the sponge regularly to avoid streaks.
4. Let dry and reclean
Allow the grout to dry completely before you finally clean the tiles. Use a soft cloth and clear water to remove any residue and bring out the shine of the tiles.
To facilitate subsequent cleaning, we recommend using a grouting aid, e.g. Fila PRW200 or Lithofin Fleckstopp. Apply the grout with a sponge and allow it to dry out completely before grouting.
After installation and grouting, the cement tiles should be thoroughly cleaned, then impregnated and waxed. For more information, see our guide to Cleaning cement tiles.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
1. Inadequate preparation of the substrate
A poor surface can lead to uneven installation and subsequent problems. Take time to thoroughly prepare.
2. Work too fast
Take your time installing and grouting. Careful and accurate work leads to a better result.
3. Wrong glue or grout
Always use the adhesive and mortar recommended for cement tiles. If in doubt, ask a specialist.

The tiles should be intensively impregnated and waxed. Maintenance cleaning can then be carried out with neutral cleaners or soap-based cleaners. Under no circumstances should an acidic cleaner or vinegar cleaner be used. All the tools you need for impregnation, waxing and cleaning, We are happy to offer you.
Are cement tiles also suitable for outdoor installation?
Mosaico cement tiles have been tested and are frost-proof. However, we do not recommend outdoor installation. Cement tiles are laid with a very tight joint, sometimes with a crunch. A tight joint requires particularly careful execution in order to achieve a high level of tightness. If some water still penetrates through the joint, the water can freeze there. Since water expands a bit when frozen, the cement tiles would inevitably crack.
